Louisville Trails Ole Miss 10-6 After Defensive First Half in Nashville
Summary
Pick/market: Louisville's defense kept the Cardinals within striking distance during a mistake-filled season-opening first half Sunday night at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.
Louisville's defense kept the Cardinals within striking distance during a mistake-filled season-opening first half Sunday night at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.  No. 24 Louisville forced two turnovers and limited No. 9 Ole Miss to 148 yards, but the Cardinals struggled to make the most of those opportunities. UofL trails Ole Miss 10-6 at halftime.  Louisville opened the scoring with a 10-play, 47-yard drive that consumed more than six minutes. Quarterback Lincoln Kienholz completed a 22-yard pass to Jaleel Skinner to move the Cardinals inside the Ole Miss 10-yard line, but two delay-of-game penalties stalled the drive. Cooper Hillbert salvaged the drive with a field goal, giving Louisville a 3-0 lead with 7:19 remaining in the first quarter.  Louisville's defense had its first takeaway on the ensuing possession. Louisville Edge Clev Lubin forced Trinidad Chambliss to fumble near the Louisville 40.  Louisville failed to capitalize, going three-and-out after taking possession. Ole Miss tied the game early in the second quarter. Chambliss connected with Traylon Ray for 31 yards during an 11-play, 60-yard drive, which Lucas Carneiro finished with a 43-yard field goal. Then, it got damaging for Louisville. Kienholz overthrew wide receiver Tre Richardson on a wide-open route that likely would've resulted in a touchdown. Then, a botched punt forced Louisville to down the ball on fourth down at the UofL 12-yard line. Ole Miss only needed four plays to take advantage, with Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy scoring on a one-yard rushing touchdown with 10:38 remaining in the half.  Louisville's defense continued its strong first half. UofL safety Stanquan Clark intercepted Chambliss at the Louisville 44-yard line on Ole Miss' next possession. However, Louisville responded with another three-and-out.  Ole Miss moved from its own 20 to the Louisville 29-yard line before Carneiro missed a 46-yard field goal with 1:43 remaining. Louisville took advantage with a field goal to cut the deficit to four at the half.
