Can Rutgers get things fixed and bounce back from its embarassing loss to UMass?
Summary
QB/OL: Bobby, as all have commented, a very well written and thought out analysis of what needs to be done, especially how you broke it down into different groups!
Bobby, as all have commented, a very well written and thought out analysis of what needs to be done, especially how you broke it down into different groups! AND WHAT WE ALL OBSERVED ON THURSDAY NIGHT.
My opinion only, Coach Turner has to earn his pay this week, and find a way to motivate and get his offensive line to play, at the very least, as well as they played most games in 2025. No excuse for the performances by Asamoah and Needham, and Giwa needs to step it up as well. Vigna and Salami were not terrible, but both can play better. And, maybe it is time to play Chin, either at the tackle position, or in at guard.
To me, the key to the BC game is establishing our running game, eating up time of possession, and grinding out scores, and that all starts with the offensive line. Raymond, then Thevenin and Benjamin, get to the holes and do their thing. The play of the offensive line sets the tone for this upcoming game. Yes,I know we have an all world receiver in Duff, but the running game eats up time, and keeps our defense, until it has improved enough, off the field.
As the offensive line opens up the running game, then Lonergan, as he gradually gets better as a Qb, has the time to make good reads, and find the open receivers, and make improved throws. Yes, Lonergan , maybe even more than .Raymond, needs the offensive line to make the most improvement from the UMASS game. Unlike AK, Lonergan does not appear to have the moxie to move around in the pocket, and find the best option in his receivers, not yet , but maybe as he develops.
As to the defense, two things may be true unfortunately, in your analysis, the portal evaluations were way off on the defensive additions. BUT, realistically, I have a hard time believing that was actually the case on ALL the additions, a few, yes, a reasonable assumption, but not all of them?
So then, maybe what we saw from the defensive portal additions was a combination of being flat, lacking energy, and a few poor evaluations? IF, BIG IF, TJ and his staff can get any type of incremental improvements out of the portal additions., My focus would be on the new edge rushers and Morris, along with Hones and Humes. We desperately need a pass rush from the edges, to help our secondary players. Hello Mr. Kromah, and Mr. Davis. All the portal additions, in the secondary, were reported to have more speed than the guys we played last season, and believe that to be true. Plus, yes Henderson played well for Virginia, but think all the new guys brought in are faster, and potentially better defensive backs. And, really have to believe, we can play much better run defense than we did against UMASS, as, realistically, Blue-Eli, Porter, Angoy, Griffin, and GNAGO, have the size and skill, so really do not know what caused our interior rush defense to play so poorly? Was it a simple fact that
pop .Watson could use his legs to break contain, and beat our defensive line and linebackers? TJ, he had better address that aspect of our defense, or that BC QB is going to have a field day against our defense.
Not to be forgotten, truly think Sanders at safety, would have made a difference in the coverages and run support, had he played against UMASS. Was not impressed with Joines last season, and Noel, too inexperienced, but probably will improve after his first start, as for Ofurie, too good of a player, going forward, inexpect him to improve and play well as he masters the Stud position.
Plus, no idea why TJ has not played the young, big, and fast linebackers, like Mcclary and .Archie? Sure, they may have not mastered the intricacies of his new defense, but play them, and give them opportunities to develop and grow. No disrespect meant for Allison, but if he doesn’t have the speed and size/strength to make the play, maybe Mcclary, Archie, and Deloatch do, even if struggling with their read and assignments.
We all know Walker has the physical tools, TJ needs to really work to get him into the mix, as well as Wright. Both players have been in the fire of .big .ten games, which is a benefit going forward. Just hope TJ and his staff, see the benefit of that experience, especially after the beat down by UMASS.
GS and his whole coaching staff, need to right the ship, so that we come out ready to compete and be extremely competitive against BC, and manage to walk away with the win, via the run, pass, and/or defensive stops. As Bobby objectively stated, a lot of areas in need of corrections, so have to believe GS has been coaching long enough, to recognize the order of importance in what needs to be fixed, immediately, to give Rutgers the best chance for success on Friday night.
Enough with the coach speak from GS, just do it, and motivate the players to improve their collective performances., while you as coaches design a game plan, both defensively and offensively, that puts all these players in the best possible position to win.
TBD.
