CHAPEL HILL – Bill Belichick defended his football program and how it's run on Monday morning during North Carolina's weekly press conference in advance of the Tar Heels' home game on Saturday against East Tennessee State.
Amidst a cloud hanging over the program after former general manager Michael Lombardi's resignation last week and a WRAL report about an internal investigation into the program, the majority of Belichick's presser focused on the investigation, including if his program is fully compliant.
"Yes, totally," Belichick replied.
And with respect to why the program is being investigated, Belichick stayed the course.
"I understand you're gonna keep asking those questions," he said. "I can't speak about that."
That was the main tenor of the head coach's press conference at the Kenan Football Center.
Lombardi, who was placed on paid leave on July 27, formally resigned last Thursday. An hour later, the WRAL report broke and has been the main story hovering over the program since.
Including an opening statement by program spokesperson Brandon Faber and Belichick's opening statement that is typical for a press conference, it took almost 13 minutes before Belichick was asked a question about football.
The WRAL report focused on an internal investigation into allegations of possible drug use and sexual relations between staff and coaches and players, among other things.
Belichick mostly deflected every question, multiple times replying, "We are not allowed to talk about the investigation."
Steve Belichick, Bill's son and UNC's defensive coordinator, has been on medical leave since the first week of training camp in early August. He's also named in the WRAL report as one of the focuses of the investigation.
Bill Belichick has maintained for the last month that there is no timetable for Steve's return. It came up again on Monday, including a query into how Steve is coming along and if his eventual return will be affected by the outcome of the investigation.
"He's still on medical leave… No," Belichick said.
In addition, Belichick said he has not spoken with his superiors at UNC about his personal job security, that he's addressed the story with his team "honestly," and "My job is to get the team ready to play this weekend."
UNC is 1-0 after beating TCU in the opener in Ireland on August 29. The Tar Heels' home opener in at noon on Saturday against ETSU.
