Purdue offensive grades and snap counts...
Quick notes on offense...
- Purdue with three players that graded in the NFL-caliber category in Fame Ijeboi, Asaad Waseem, and Ryan Browne. Now, it was against Indiana State, for perspective. Still, you couldn't ask for better performances from two key transfer pickups in the offseason and your returning quarterback.
- Ryan Browne with an efficient and calculated performance, going 23-of-29 for 317 yards and three touchdowns, which earned him an 87.1 grade. He only had one bad pass on his second attempt of the game, a wobbler towards the corner of the end zone intended for George Burhenn that ended up being way short and could have been intercepted if the defender was more aware. Aside from that toss, a performance you want to see against an FCS opponent.
- We saw a lot of the trio of transfer running backs throughout the night, but Fame Ijeboi started off in the backfield and quickly established himself as the guy. He showed off his elusiveness and speed, rushing for 87 yards on 11 carries (7.9 ypc) with one touchdown while hauling in two catches for 30 yards. He could have had more, but his 63-yard touchdown run in the second quarter was called back due to a holding penalty on wide receiver Jaylan Hornsby. Overall, a 93.9 grade, that'll play.
- Asaad Waseem became a big-play guy for Browne in the passing game, hauling in six catches for 107 yards, which included an 18-yard touchdown. That earned him a 90.2 grade. If a first-down was needed, he got it and then some.
- Penalties were an issue, particularly in the first half. It's something Barry Odom was clearly annoyed with in the postgame press conference. I mentioned the penalty on Hornsby, which negated a would-be touchdown. On that same drive the offensive line had their issues, with Micah Banuelos and Boaz Stanley getting hit with false start penalties. Stanley's was on a 3rd-and-3 from the 3-yard line that killed momentum and forced the Boilers to settle for a field goal.
- Left tackle Nuku Mafi was the highest-graded starter along the offensive line for Purdue with a 67.3. He was in for the injured Joey Tanona, who injured his ankle late in fall camp. True freshman Brock Brownfield, who started at left guard, received the second-highest grade among starters with a 66.5.
