Under Rule 4-2-2, "A ball in player possession is out of bounds when either the ball or any part of the ball carrier touches the ground or anything else that is out of bounds, or that is on or outside a boundary line, except another player or game official."
Under Rule 4-2-3-a, "A ball not in player control, other than a kick that scores a field goal, is out of bounds when it touches the ground, a player, a game official or anything else that is out of bounds, or that is on or outside a boundary line."
The question is whether the NAU player touched it while out of bounds after it became loose. I tend to think the follow through of the punch would result in touching the loose ball while out of bounds, but I didn't look that closely.
