Cobb 'what an Auburn Tiger should be'
Summary
Pick/market: Auburn has one starter back on offense from last season, running back Jeremiah Cobb.
Auburn has one starter back on offense from last season, running back Jeremiah Cobb. He went into Saturday's game as one of the top players on that side of the ball for the Tigers and a big key to success for coach Alex Golesh's team. While he didn't have the numbers on the ground that he or the coaches expected, it didn't keep the Montgomery native from playing a big part in Auburn's 17-16 win over Baylor in Atlanta. On third and 3 from the 11-yard line and the game tied 10-10, Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown took the shotgun handoff and ran an old fashioned counter with Cobb leading the way into the hole. Meeting 6-2, 205 safety Devin Turner, Cobb blasted him to spring Brown around the corner and into the end zone for the eventual game-winner. It was a play that showcased what Brown can do, but also what Cobb is all about. "I thought Jeremiah Cobb's block was as big time as big time gets," Golesh said. "I thought Jeremiah just in general, played his butt off. And just the nature of the game, I wish we could have gotten them going a little bit more, and we will hear as we go. But you talk about throwing it in there for a running back, lead blocking for somebody that was about as impressive as anybody." Finishing the game with just 12 carries for 53 yards and a touchdown, Cobb never really had the opportunity to get a rhythm going on Saturday. Like most running backs that's something he is looking for and offensive coordinator Joel Gordon said that's still the goal for the senior in this system. "I love Jeremiah," Gordon said. "He played really hard all night long. There were a lot of reps he had where there wasn't a great opportunity to get the run started. We had some tough looks with that. The touchdown run he had, man they got both safeties in the box and he finds a way. He squeaks out the front side and has a tremendous run.  "He's going to have to continue to be exactly what he's been. He's been really productive. He's been really consistent. His attitude was incredible. Right after we convert on one of the first downs on that last drive, we hand him the ball and he's finishing that run by running over somebody on the sideline on our bench. He's bringing energy to everybody in that stadium and that's what he does. He plays so hard. He's a really good player." One game into their relationship as coordinator and running back and Gordon said he learned a whole lot about Cobb on Saturday. It showed up by the way he played the game, but also how he handled every situation that came his way. That's something that can be a teaching tool for everyone else on this roster, Gordon said. "For him to not have his number called on that last play but to be the lead block and to spring that thing the way he did, that shows you everything about him," he said. "I have been around a lot of good running backs and most of them are pretty unselfish people. There's a lot of good running backs that aren't willing to do that, to put your head down and be the lead blocker for the quarterback in that moment and make it about them. That tells you everything about Cobb right there. He's a special player. He's a great teammate. He's the definition of what an Auburn Tiger should be."
