Deion Branch says Louisville receivers displayed a 'smidgen' of group's potential in opener
Summary
WR/DL: Louisville's first team wide receivers had a nice debut for 2026.
Louisville's first team wide receivers had a nice debut for 2026. Tre Richardson, TreyShun Hurry and Lawayne McCoy each made key plays in the season opener against Ole Miss.
UofL wide receiver coach Deion Branch spent a few minutes with the media on Tuesday and was complimentary of the performance of his group.
"I think the guys are doing a decent job, as of right now, of going out and executing the plays that Coach Brohm is calling," Branch said. "I still think it's super early. I think you guys had the opportunity to see is a small smidgen of what we have been expecting all training camp, all winter having a glimpse and getting opportunities to see these guys execute these plays. We missed on a couple plays during the game that I know the players want back for sure, and I'm also knowing that Coach Brohm wanted to get to a couple more plays."
While Branch later added that he doesn't "want to give them too much credit," he did note their efforts away from the ball.
"One thing that I did praise the guys for is their actual perimeter blocking," Branch said. "I felt like the guys did a real good job blocking on the edge. I'm super proud about that. You can't be a complete receiver if you just want to go out and catch passes, you have to actually block as well. So I'm very tough on those guys about that portion of the game, but I thought overall they went out and did what they had to do."
The receivers will have an opportunity to make those plays and more in the home opener against Villanova on Friday night.
