Biddle: Translating Day | Kenyatta Jackson gushes about Khary Wilder
Summary

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day met with the media on Tuesday to discuss the showdown at Texas on Saturday (7:30 p.m. ET; ABC) and more. I am going to do my best to "translate" – so to speak – some of the more interesting topics Day touched on. The press conference kicked off with Bucknuts asking Day for his thoughts on how the Buckeyes' offensive line played against Ball State – specifically at right tackle – and whether there might be a personnel change up front against Texas. "There was some good, but some other things we have to improve on," Day said. "I think early on, we didn't run the ball the way we wanted to, and then it opened up better in the second half. And so, we'll continue to evaluate that throughout the week and figure out if we have the right mix out there. "And the good news is we do have flexibility if we need to. But, we're going to evaluate the week and see how that goes." Translation: It was embarrassing in the first half, against what will likely be the worst or second-worst defense we face all year. I'm ticked off about it, and Phillip Daniels is on the shortest of leashes. ** Day was also asked about the highly controversial ending of the Michigan-Western Michigan game last Saturday and what he thought about one second being added to the clock after it appeared as though the game ended. I thought he gave the perfect response. "Yeah, I really haven't been focused on that at all," Day said. "It's been all, as you can imagine, all about Texas. That's it. I mean, all of our time. The minute we got done with that game, it was on to Texas. "And so, obviously (I) read about it and saw it, but (I) really haven't really thought much about it." Translation: Of course it was a bogus ending, but I'm not touching that with a 10-foot pole. Nice try. ** Day told everyone last Tuesday that wide receiver Devin McCuin is "as good as we've had here," which raised a lot of eyebrows. Then everyone saw how McCuin played and it's easy to see why the coaches are so high on him. "When I watched him on film (at UTSA), I sort of thought to myself he could sort of be like a Chris Olave-type," Day said. "That was sort of the comp. We always try to look at comps, and that was sort of the one that I used. He has high-end speed. He can change direction. He's got really strong hands, good quickness. "Now, what I didn't know about him was just his makeup, and he's very intelligent, really good route runner, and he has experience. He has toughness. He sticks it in there in the run game, and he's been great, and I think he really turned it on this summer." Translation: We got the biggest steal out of the portal in the country. You ever hear me compare another WR to Olave before? Exactly. And we didn't even come close to paying top dollar for Devin, even though he would have been worth it for sure! Our roster/NIL management is the best in the nation. Peace out. No need to 'translate' Kenyatta When a fifth-year senior captain speaks highly of a freshman, we take notice. And that is exactly what transpired on Tuesday when Kenyatta Jackson Jr. was asked about fellow defensive end Khary Wilder, who was extremely impressive in his collegiate debut. Jackson certainly did not hesitate when asked when he knew that Wilder would be able to help the Buckeyes right away this season. "I knew from day one," Jackson said. "I mean, his energy from day one, it was just like, oof, you're going to be a really good player for sure. And he showed it on Saturday. I mean, his first game in the shoe, you know, was in there on (rushmen packages), and, I mean, he did what he did, so he's got to build on it." Day mentioned player comps. Is there a defensive lineman that Jackson would compare Wilder to? "No, I think he's in his own category for sure," Jackson said. "I mean, he's going to be a real good player here for sure." Yeah, no need to translate any of that. The Buckeyes have a gem in Wilder. Keep it locked to Bucknuts for full coverage of Ohio State football.
