Beamer: Gamecocks could've been better in Week 1 win
Summary
Coaching: South Carolina is 1-0 and the next game could be even more one-sided than 57-0.
South Carolina is 1-0 and the next game could be even more one-sided than 57-0. With that in mind, Shane Beamer has decided to take on the bad cop roll.
The sixth-year head coach as is done basking in the glory of 645 yards with a 50-burger on offense and a shutout by the defense. Towson is up next, with nine-straight SEC games and Clemson to close out the schedule.
"What we've talked to our team about this week – a lot of good that we did against Kent State, but going back and looking at the tape, there were a lot of things that we stunk at, in my opinion. … Fifty-seven points, good. A shutout, good. Three penalties, awesome," he said.
Enter Sheriff Beamer.
"Perimeter blocking, not so good. Our effort to the ball at times, not so good. Our ability when they punt to hold up their gunners to get Vicari (Swain) started, not good. Our ability to contain the quarterback last Saturday and not letting him run two times for 50 yards, not good," Beamer said, "So there's a lot of for us to really dial in and hone-in on this week, to try and be a better football team than what we were last Saturday."
Saturday started promising for the offense, with Kendal Briles calling plays and Randy Clements working with the linemen. The first play was a first-down pass to Nyck Harbor. Three plays later, LaNorris Sellers hit Mazeo Bennett Jr. to convert their third-down opportunity.
A familiar sequence followed: False start to setup a 1-yard run on first-and-15 that was blown up by poor blocking on the perimeter. Off target throw on second-down. Sack on third-and-long to setup fourth-and-even-longer.
South Carolina scored a touchdown on each of the next eight possessions.
Beamer wants that to improve.
"We showed that we've got a good offense," he said, "Do it two weeks in a row. We feel good about the performance, but also left some plays out there. Our perimeter blocking at times was poor. I think our effort when we didn't have the ball in our hands, at times, was poor. We missed some throws in the passing game, whether it be quarterback and receiver. There are some plays we'd like to have back, so that's just want I want to see. Improvement and playing to our standard."
