E... show more By my count, there were only 2 "pass" plays where I think Hawkins could've done better - the RPO where he ran it and missed a wide open WR (but still got the 1st down) and the incomplete pass in the 4th quarter where he missed Neider. We'd called an old run n shoot concept - switch slot choice from a spread doubles set. On each side, the outside WR that switches inside can run a seam streak, a post, a dig, or a curl. The inside WR that switches outside can run a streak or break it off into a curl. Hawkins was reading the boundary and the outside WR on that side (I think Bray or Francis) switched inside and stopped in a curl. There was more space in the middle of the field and it looked like Hawkins was waiting for him to turn it into a dig, but it never happened. He felt the pressure so he threw outside shoulder to the inside WR (this case it was Ward) who broke off the curl. Hawkins missed Neider on the field side who hit the seam streak and was open, but if the boundary outside WR had read the defense the same as Hawkins, it should've been a first down in a dig route. Did Hawkins miss a guy on both? Yes. But I don't really blame him on either one. He didn't do anything in the passing game that should've made us gun shy from throwing more.
