Non Conference Primer Week 1 (Thu/Fri games)
Summary
Pick/market: Had to break this into two...I guess anything over 10,000 characters is forbidden.
Had to break this into two...I guess anything over 10,000 characters is forbidden. Thu, Sept 3 Colorado (picked for 15th Big 12) at Georgia Tech (picked tied for 9th ACC) (7:00 p.m. ESPN) (Georgia Tech favored by 6.5) Second time these teams have ever played, Tech won 27-20 last season in Boulder, scoring the game winner with 1:07 left. Deion under pressure after last season’s 3-9 record? One of two P4 games Colorado has scheduled for non-conference (at Northwestern 9/19). Both teams claimed a share of the 1990 NCAA championship (Colorado AP, Tech Coaches poll). A shot for the Big 12 to pull an upset over the ACC, which would be nice after TCU lost to UNC last weekend. Fri, Sept 4 Toledo (picked tied for 3rd MAC) at Michigan State (picked for 17th Big 10) (7:00 p.m. FS1) (Michigan State favored by 10) Michigan State has had four straight losing seasons and now moves to former Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald. Spartans are 8-0 since 2017 vs. the MAC—but this is a decent Toledo team against an MSU team picked for 17th in the Big 10…upset time? Toledo also has a new head coach, Mike Jacobs from Mercer. Teams haven’t met since 1925 (MSU won 58-0). Miami (picked for 1st ACC) at Stanford (picked for 16th ACC) (8:00 p.m. ESPN) (Miami favored by 24.5) An early ACC conference game. Miami—despite participating in last year’s national championship game—has never won an ACC title (lost out in tiebreaker last season). Hurricanes first ever trip to Palo Alto—a mere 3,017 miles away. Stanford has a new head coach (Tavita Pritchard, played QB at Stanford ’06-’09, no head coaching experience). Stanford does have one game under its belt, knocking off Hawaii in Palo Alto last weekend 37-27. Miami defeated Stanford in Miami last season 42-7. Fresno State (picked tied for 2nd Pac 12) at USC (picked for 4th Big 10) (8:00 p.m. Fox) (USC favored by 22.5) Fresno State brings back 13 starters for their first season in the revamped Pac-12 with this meeting vs. former iconic Pac-12 school. USC and coach Lincoln Riley under pressure following three seasons of single digit wins. Advantage USC in this game as they played last weekend (defeated San Jose State 42-26 [led at one point 35-3]). USC has won 16 straight vs. Mountain West—Trojans did lose to Fresno in ’92 Freedom Bowl but have won last five vs. the Bulldogs.
