No. 3 Georgia came to Sanford Stadium on Saturday fully intending to make quick work of Tennessee State.
The Bulldogs scored touchdowns on their first five drives to set the tone in a 63-3 victory. It was hard to ask for much more from Georgia (1-0, 0-0 SEC), which dominated the first half of action before cruising through the final 30 minutes to earn its first win of the season.
"The message was, you know, first impression. And first impression of this team would be judged by how they handled the opponent and how well they played to our standard or not," Kirby Smart said after the game. "I thought, you know, for three quarters there — first, third, and fourth — we did that. Second, we had some sloppiness, didn't do some things well.
"But I thought the guys played really hard. I thought they beat the heat. I didn't feel like the heat impacted us. And, you know, a lot of credit and respect to Tennessee State. He's trying to turn his program around, and that's tough to do. A really tough battle last week, and then came in today and they fought. So respect to Coach and his staff and program."
Our weekly freshman report will likely include more names than usual. The NCAA's move to a 5-for-5 model (athletes have five years to play five seasons with very few waiver exceptions) means coaches will not have to carefully track how many games each freshman has appeared in.
While this story is no longer useful when it comes to redshirting, it gives us a sense of which young pups are ready to contribute. Georgia played 27 freshmen in Week 1. Here's a breakdown of what they did and their snap counts according to Pro Football Focus:
