5 questions I still have now that spring ball has officially closed
Summary
BYU DEs got 6.5 sacks last year; LBs like Jack Kelly (10) did most QB pressure in Hill's scheme.
Cmcalderwood said... (original post) Our defense had 30 sacks last season, 7 of which were from guys that played the traditional DE spot. That's the most we've had since 2016. Tho... show more Yes, a quick Google AI search regarding BYU's 2025 pass rushing provided most of the things you stated in your first paragraph--even the 2016 reference. Things I did not say in my previous statement: 1) our DE crew never got to the QB last year; 2) our DE crew from last year were not an improvement from previous years in pass rushing; 3) sacks are only meant to come from the DE position; 4) Hill's scheme was not meant for LBs such as Jack Kelly (10 sacks) to get to the QB the most; 5) safeties, cornerbacks, etc. did not blitz last year. 6) our DEs did not have run defense duties like forcing runners inside and not giving up the edge. Yada yada. I'll grant that what I said was ambiguous. If you have questions about something I said, then ask. According to ESPN, our DEs got 6.5 sacks last year. I don't know how many plays we ran last year, but seven instances from the overall total can make it seem like our DEs never got to the QB. My overall point was that I would like to see more. Why? Because it (among other things) will help us be a playoff team. Some of the guys who were listed as starters for 2025 were not great at pass rushing. Logan Lutui, a good tackler, did not record a sack. Viliami Pouha only had one. Bodie Schoonover did impress me with three sacks. In situations like 3rd and long where we only send 3 and drop 8, then I obviously don't have any expectations for the pass rush. Sounds like we already agree that we're optimistic about the future of the position.
