I looked up why the SEC offices are in Birmingham and i thought it was interesting so i'll share. The decision to move the Southeastern Conference (SEC) headquarters to Birmingham was made by Bernie Moore, the league's second full-time commissioner, in 1948. Moore, a former head football and track coach at LSU , took over the conference leadership in 1948 and wanted to move the head offices out of Jackson, Mississippi, to a more central location. The league leadership narrowed down the choices to Birmingham, Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. Birmingham was chosen for two main reasons: [1] The Neutrality Rule: At the time, Georgia Tech was a charter member of the SEC. League leadership preferred not to place the headquarters in a city that already housed a member university. Because Birmingham did not have an SEC school within its city limits, it was considered neutral ground. [2] Aggressive Pitching: The city of Birmingham and local civic leaders actively and aggressively campaigned to bring the conference offices to town.
