Records/Rankings: Both teams opened their seasons last weekend with lopsided wins. Mississippi State defeated ULM 62-13; Minnesota beat Eastern Illinois 59-7. Neither team is ranked nationally. Mississippi State was 5-8 a year ago, losing in the Duke's Mayo Bowl to Wake Forest 43-29. Minnesota finished 8-5 in 2025, edging New Mexico 20-17 at the Rate Bowl in Phoenix.
Coaches: Mississippi State head football coach Jeff Lebby is in his third season as a collegiate head coach and has an 8-18 overall mark, 1-15 in the Southeastern Conference. Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck is in his 14th season overall as a collegiate head coach, 10th at UM. He is 97-66 overall, 67-44 with the Golden Gophers. Fleck was head coach at Western Michigan, 2013-16.
Series History: This is the first meeting ever between Mississippi State of the Southeastern Conference and Minnesota from the Big 10.
Players to Watch: Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor couldn't have had a better start to his 2026 season. He completed 22 of 34 passes (64.7 percent) for 354 yards and four touchdowns. He led the offense to scoring drives on each of his seven possessions under center. Anthony Evans picked right up in 2026 where he left off in '25. He had seven catches for 118 yards and one score. Ten other receivers caught passes.
Back-up running back J.J. Hill rushed seven times for 118 yards (16.9 average) and a pair of TDs to lead the rushing attack. Taylor, Kolin Wilson and Fluff Bothwell had 59, 53, and 52 yards respectively, for a ground game that averaged 9.3 yards per carry.
Linebacker Jalen Smith led the defense with eight tackles, including a half-tackle for loss. Will Whitson, Kendel Dolby, and Fatt Forrest all had six hits each. Jaray Bledsoe had 1.5 tackles for loss. Trevion Williams recorded a quarterback sack.
Mississippi State has two premier specialists in placekicker Kyle Ferrie and punter Ethan Pulliam.
Ferrie made both of his field goal attempts against ULM and has now converted 19 of his last 22 three-point attempts. Pulliam, who averaged better than 48 yards per punt last year, only averaged 35.5 yards per punt against ULM, both coming in short-field situations.
Minnesota quarterback Drake Lindsey completed 19 of 24 passes (.792) for 264 yards and a touchdown in the Gophers' season opener.
Darius Taylor led the rushers with 56 yards on 14 carries, but the ground game only produced 147 yards on 3.9 per rush.
Javon Tracy was Lindsey's favorite target (five catches, 19.8 per grab), but he really made his presence felt in the return game. He brought back four punts for 167 yards (41.8 average), with two touchdowns (87 and 69 yards).
The Outlook: The favorite's role has flipped in this game, from one sideline to the other. That said, the spread has been low on either side. It is mostly a pick em game, and home field plays a role. As in most tightly contested games, the outcome could be decided by one play late in the game.
Next week: Mississippi State stays on the road and plays its first SEC contest at South Carolina next Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:15 pm CT at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.
