Vols Who Were Better in the NFL than in College
Summary
Injury: I see this a lot and completely understand the thought but it also should be considered what a crowded offensive backfield he was in.
I see this a lot and completely understand the thought but it also should be considered what a crowded offensive backfield he was in. IMO Dobbs is one of the best running QBs I have ever seen in the SEC. He’s the best running QB I remember at Tennessee. He was a highlight waiting to happen. At the time we were screaming to run him more. And Hurd was on track to break the career rushing mark in three years before he quit. We also had future NFL RB John Kelly as the third running back. At WR we had Jauan Jennings, Marquez Calloway, Josh Malone, Preston Williams and Jason Croom and Ethan Wolf at tight end. In looking at that 2016 team that finished 9-4 Hurd had 455 yards (3.7 ypc) on 121 rushing attempts in seven games. Kamara had 596 yards (5.8 ypc) on 103 attempts in 11 games. Kelly had 630 yards (6.4 ypc) on 98 attempts in 11 games. Dobbs led the team in rushing with 831 yards (5.5 ypc) on 150 attempts (I assume sacks included) in 11 games. In hindsight we shouldn’t rode Hurd so hard early in the season. That ended up leading to him getting injured and ultimately quitting the team in the middle of season. But when he was on he was a badass running back. He could run over a defender and was fast enough to get to the edge on sweeps and was a good receiver and pass blocker. I think everyone including Hurd would have been better off if he’d quit before the season. Wasn’t there stories that he might have tried to quit but Butch made him promises to play him in a different role but didn’t follow through on the promise? But, man that was a talented team that could be a lot of fun to watch. It was mismanaged offensively for sure. But the mismanagement seems to have been with Hurd. Kamara has been an excellent receiver out of the backfield in the NFL. He had 40 receptions for 492 yards and 4 receiving TDs in 2016. Hurd had 10 receptions for 81 yards and 2 receiving TDs in seven games and Kelly had 6 receptions for 51 yards and 0 receiving TDs that season.
