Well boys & girls, it's a little late in the week but I was so busy counting my money from going 12-1 in Week One of college football I almost forgot to post this week's prediction and game breakdown.
As predicted by yours truly, South Carolina demolished Kent State in Week 1 and brings an unblemished 1-0 record back to Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday night to take on the Towson Tigers. I predicted 59-3 so I was off by a tad.
Today's theme is:
Who TF is Towson?
I'll be honest, I don't know too much about Townson, so I had to dig deep to try and get some information on them.
Let's get to it:
1. South Carolina's Power Ground Game vs. Towson's Run Defense
The definitive mismatch of this game lies in the trenches. Under new offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, South Carolina's rushing attack exploded for 278 yards against Kent State. Freshman running back Jabree Coleman (77 yards, 2 TDs) and explosive sophomore back Matt Fuller (74 yards) spearhead a highly physical rotation.
They face a vulnerable Towson front seven that has repeatedly folded against the run. Last weekend, the Tigers' defense surrendered over
500 rushing yards
to Navy's ground assault. Expect South Carolina to lean heavily on the inside zone and read-option packages early to overwhelm Towson's defensive line and command the clock.
2. LaNorris Sellers’ Efficiency and Dynamic Perimeter Targets
Third-year starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers looked exceptionally smooth in Week 1, completing 19 of 23 passes for 270 yards and 3 touchdowns. Briles' vertical pacing allows deep-threat targets like Donovan Murph (92 yards, 2 TDs) and Nyck Harbor (70 yards) to stretch coverage. Because Towson likes to take downfield risks defensively, Sellers will have clear opportunities to exploit single-coverage looks on play-action deep shots.
3. Gamecock Havoc Against Sophomore QB Andrew Indorf
Towson sophomore quarterback Andrew Indorf (the 2025 CAA Co-Offensive Rookie of the Year) is the focal point of the Tigers' offense. He threw for over 2,300 yards last season but has struggled during Towson's 0-2 start this year against lower-tier competition.
Even with South Carolina resting standout edge rushers Dylan Stewart and Jacarrius Peak due to minor injuries, the Gamecocks boast overwhelming defensive depth. Towson prefers an aggressive downfield passing scheme. This works directly into the hands of a disciplined Gamecock secondary and a fierce pass rush that will look to force multiple turnovers via sack-fumbles or hurried interceptions.
Keys to the South Carolina covering the spread:
1. Execute an Unstoppable Rushing Attack
Towson's run defense was thoroughly exposed last week, surrendering over 500 rushing yards to Navy. Offensive coordinator Kendal Briles must lean directly into this weakness. Establishing a physical ground game early with running backs Jabree Coleman and Matt Fuller will tire out the Tigers' front seven, ensure consistent touchdown drives, and prevent stalled possessions that stall a blowout.
2. Maximize Starter Efficiency Before the Bench Empties
Head coach Shane Beamer will naturally want to protect key starters ahead of the SEC schedule. For the Gamecocks to cover such a high line, quarterback LaNorris Sellers and the starting unit must play perfectly in the first half. Building a swift 35-to-40 point cushion by halftime is critical before backup units take over the game clock.
3. Exploit the Deep Ball on Play-Action
Towson’s defensive backfield plays an aggressive style that leaves them vulnerable downfield. Sellers needs to utilize play-action fakes to draw the Tigers' safeties closer to the line of scrimmage. Hitting wide receivers Donovan Murph and Nyck Harbor on quick, explosive vertical routes will yield rapid scores without burning excessive game time.
4. Create Short Fields Via Defensive Turnovers
The Gamecock defense will face a Towson passing attack that has already allowed nine sacks this season. Even with edge rushers Dylan Stewart and Jacarrius Peak likely resting, South Carolina's secondary must force hurried decisions from Towson quarterback Andrew Indorf. Defensive backs like Vicari Swain and Judge Collier converting pressures into turnovers will grant the offense short fields to build the point gap rapidly.
5. Play Completely Clean Football
The easiest way for an underdog to cover a 43.5-point line is through self-inflicted mistakes by the favorite. South Carolina must avoid costly penalties, blown coverages, and unforced turnovers. Maintaining focus on special teams coverage and securing the football will deny Towson any cheap, momentum-shifting points that could ruin the cover.
Official BTCock Prediction:
South Carolina defeats Townson to move to 2-0 on the season.
