When I was getting up to go to work (late shift, 11-8) my old school answering machine was blinking five times—it was my gf, out of state dad, sister, boss and coworker. I remember seeing those blinking lights before I checked the msgs and thinking, “Whatever this is, it’s not good.” It wasn’t. Eventually I wandered out in a daze, fortunately finding an open coffee place on Foothill in La Cañada. There was one guy working and he looked like a zombie, i thanked him for working. Several years later there was a running back named Manfro for Valencia High whose dad was a retired NYC policeman. He moved his family out to Southern Caifornia for a well deserved fresh start after 9/11. His son was a terrific player who was a combination of Marshall Faulk and Christian McCaffery. Ended up going to ucla where his career was derailed by injuries. I heard he became an LAPD officer, which may have been preordained in a way.
