Game Analysis - Washington/Utah State
Summary
Pick/market: Play of the Game/Turning Point - Alex McLaughlin's Fourth Quarter Interception.
Play of the Game/Turning Point - Alex McLaughlin's Fourth Quarter Interception. With just under 10 minutes remaining in the game, Grady Brosterhous, facing 2nd-and-16 from his own 35, dropped back and was forced to his right. McLaughlin stepped in front of his pass, fought the receiver for the ball and he came away with it at the Aggie 44. It appeared to be the final nail in the coffin, but Washington's offense stalled and they had to settle for a 43-yard field goal from Tyler Robles. While it didn't put USU away, it gave Washington their final points which were enough to come away with the win.
Offensive Player of the Game - QB Demond Williams. We'll give it to the Husky quarterback, but it's more because there wasn't anyone else who had a standout game. He finished 26 of 41 for 249 yards and also had 56 yards rushing, leading the team in both categories.
Defensive Player of the Game - S Alex McLaughlin. He finished with a team-high nine tackles and two sacks as well as an interception and two pass breakups.
Handouts To The Standouts - CB Dylan Robinson had five tackles, two pass breakups and an interception; DL Derek Colman-Brusa had four tackles and a sack; LB Xe'ree Alexander had four tackles; CB Jeron Jones, who had to replace Emmanuel Karnley, with the first unit, totaled four tackles and a pass breakup; DT Kai McClendon had three tackles and a tackle-for-loss; RB Ansu Sanoe scored his first collegiate touchdown and got his first carries as college tailback; WR Jordan Clay totaled four receptions for 42 yards; WR Trez Davis totaled 44 yards on four reception.
Key Stat - The Huskies were just 6 of 17 on third down, thwarting any attempts they made to keep the ball and drive down the field.
Needs Work - Washington averaged just 4.8 yards per play. Their lack of explosive plays against a decent, but less-talented Utah State defense is definitely concerning.
The Bottom Line - The Huskies have yet to play a complete game, but they are still 2-0. That's the good news. The bad news is, players keep getting hurt and it's hard to imagine things getting markedly better in the coming weeks. Luckily they have one more "tune up", vs. Eastern Washington next week, before they begin Big Ten play. Let's hope that is enough time to get things right or it could be a long rest of the season.
