That was not a satisfying win
Summary
Pick/market: I actually went back and looked at the numbers.

(original post) If we throw for over 300 against the conference teams with that level of run production we are playing from behind and likely losing or in a 4th... show more Not true. I actually went back and looked at the numbers. Virginia Tech finished today with 416 yards of total offense and 327 passing yards in the 44–21 win over ODU. For comparison, I looked at VT’s game-by-game offensive production over the 2024 and 2025 seasons. When Virginia Tech produced at least 416 yards of total offense, they went 5–2, a 71.4% winning percentage. Add today’s game and VT is now 6–2 (.750) since the beginning of 2024 when producing at least 416 yards of offense. The individual 416+ yard games from 2024–25: • 465 vs. ODU — W • 532 vs. Boston College — W • 455 vs. Syracuse — L • 456 vs. Virginia — W • 433 vs. ODU — L • 461 vs. Wofford — W • 476 vs. Cal — W Passing for 300+ is a smaller sample because VT simply hasn’t done it very often. In 2024–25, VT had two 300+ passing performances: 322 against Vanderbilt (L) and 307 against Wofford (W). Add today’s 327-yard performance (W) and VT is 2–1 when passing for 300+ yards since the beginning of 2024 — a 66.7% winning percentage, not a 90% losing percentage. There’s another number I think puts today’s performance into perspective. Over the 2024 and 2025 seasons, Virginia Tech averaged roughly 412 yards of offense in its wins, compared with about 329 yards in its losses. VT had 416 today. Does that mean the offense was perfect? Of course not. Does 400+ yards guarantee you’re going to win? Obviously not. Football doesn’t work that way. Turnovers, red-zone efficiency, field position, defense, special teams and a dozen other things determine the outcome. But I don’t understand dismissing 416 yards of offense and 327 passing yards as though that’s somehow inherently poor offensive production. And give ODU some credit. They tackled well and didn’t give VT a lot of cheap yards on the ground. Sometimes the other team actually makes plays too. There are plenty of legitimate things to criticize about Virginia Tech football. But statistically, 416 yards is right around the level of offensive production VT has averaged when WINNING over the last two seasons, and VT has now won 75% of its games since 2024 when reaching that 416-yard threshold. That’s why I think saying we’d lose “9 out of 10” with this kind of offensive production is a pretty significant exaggeration.
