Defensive Gameplan Moving Forward
Summary
Pick/market: Something I am really interested in seeing for CKW and this defense as the season progresses.
Something I am really interested in seeing for CKW and this defense as the season progresses. CKW was in an absolute flow state yesterday with his gameplan and defense play calling. Knew that UK lacks playmakers at WR, has a QB that isn't comfortable throwing the ball farther than 10-15 yards, and wants to get the ball out on the flats and to TEs. So he consistently stayed in 2 high and applied pressure. Took away the flats and collapsed the pocket. Knew our secondary and speedy LBs could neutralize the TEs, and knew UK couldn't consistently block our interior to get a downhill run game going. Just absolutely ate UK's offense's lunch. Think this also plays well for future matchups against the better offenses in the back half of the schedule. For example, UGA and LSU with good mobile QBs and TEs that can make plays down the seams would have much more success against the defensive scheme we've put out there the first two games. I kind of feel like this is intentional though. CKW talked a lot this offseason about being able to be more multiple because of personnel. The schedule has worked out favorably to allow Bama to not have to show that so far (and shouldn't have to against FSU either). USC and MS State (especially with MS State's stud QB) may require to reveal a bit more of the defensive playbook because they have some actual playmakers on offense. But otherwise, I feel like this is setting up nicely for the UGA game to be similar to the 2024 UGA game where we were able to come out and show things on defense we hadn't shown all season. Just some thoughts I had this morning while watching the replay
