But Ryan, another posted made this point today and I think it's a good one (I can't remember which one of you it was, so apologies for not giving direct credit): under prior coordinators, it didn't matter who the back was, we still ran the ball. Jordan effing Nubin ran for like 200 yards in a Big Ten game. He then played 8 games at Kent State and had 253 rushing yards TOTAL.
Ky Thomas ran for 824 yards and 6 TD in his one season here and didn't meet either of those numbers combined in the remaining 20 games of his career at Kansas and Kent State.
Zach Evans won Big Ten freshman of the week here, transferred to North Texas and got 9 total carries before leaving the game of football.
I know AJ Turner is coming off a big injury, but he ran for almost 900 yards at Marshall. He's not a scrub. TJ Thomas was pretty solid at Elon. But frankly, we haven't been able to run WITH Darius these last two years.
We still have the same OL coach that we had when Ky Thomas, Jordan Nubin, and Zach Evans were running wild. We still have the same head coach. Our running backs coach is now the guy who was better than any of the RBs above running behind an OL produced by Brian Callahan.
What's different? The coordinator.
The more I think about it, the more I think that the style of offense has probably had a big impact on Cally's coaching. They ran a totally different system at WMU and pre-Harbaugh at Minnesota and he made his hay training OLs year after year to execute that system. This pro style system is very different, and I wonder if Cally is having trouble switching over to that system.
I think Harbaugh does fine drawing up short to medium routes, and our receivers were more open yesterday in general than they were at basically any point last year. But as others have said, we don't run anything deep that really stresses defenses, and if we can't run the ball then teams are happy to sit back and let us work our way down the field in 15 plays. Because guess what? It's way more difficult to put 15-20 plays together than 8-10. We saw that yesterday...we got down to the red-ish zone and stalled.
I wasn't fully onboard the fire Harbaugh train yesterday, but I think I'm getting there now.
Both of our coordinators look very out of their depth, and I'm not seeing drastic improvements that make me think either are going to figure it out here.
