Purdue V Wake Forest Post-Mortem
Summary
Pick/market: let's look at this loss.
So let's look at this loss. We are all mad. We are all sick of losing - and losing in ever creative ways. Anyways - what does the data say?
30,000 foot view:
Purdue earned an overall grade of 63.5 - which is not horrific in the face of a loss.
100 foot view:
Offensively, the passing game performed acceptably with passing, pass blocking, and receiving all grading out in the mid 60s. The run game was not so good. Purdue's backs / Browne earned a run grade of only 58.7 (poor) on the heels of an abysmal 51.4 blocking grade.
Defensively Purdue earned a 63 grade. The rush defense graded respectably at 72.5 on the heels of dramatically better tackling (75.5 grade (good) vs last week's 51.5 (horrible) grade). The pass rushing and coverage grades were around 57 - which is just not going to win games.
So what lost Purdue this game? On offense run blocking held us back especially when the field shortened. Defensively? The pass rush was MIA for most of the game and the coverage was porous allowing Lopez to find open receivers over and over again.
Granular view:
Nine offensive players graded out at 65+ (acceptable to good). Offensively, several players graded out well - namely Chauncey Magwood, not suprisingly Fame Ijeboi (who carried the whole team on his back literally), the tight ends (on very limited snaps), Jaylan Hornsby, Assad Waseem and Xavier Townsend. Surprisingly, Boaz Stanley and Jude McCoskey both graded well on the line (both close to 70). Their pass blocking grades were extremely good in the mid to high 70s but their pass blocking grades were just okay in the low to mid 60s.
Unfortunately, three lineman graded horrifically - two on the left side of the line. Micah Banuelos graded at a 49.6 (dreadful) at LG, Marques Easley (RT) graded at a 53 (worse than true freshman Brownfield before leaving), and Nuku Mafi (LT) graded poorly at 53.4. All three of their run blocking grades were sub 50 to the low 50s which is not going to win games. Browne graded okay at around a 62.5 - but his passing grade was a 70. His run grade was low due to the bobbled snap and just generally not taking risks with his feet. Good - because Chuba isn't ready behind him. I don't see how having a 75% completion rate and no INTs or FUM is making people pissed at him. Another surprise to me is that he was only pressured on 9 passing downs out of his 42 attempts.
The defense saw only five players grade out over 65 - the highest of which was only a 70 - and that would be John Slaughter. He tackled well, was decent in coverage, and had excellent run defense. Smiley Bradford came in and played well as a backup - grading at just under 70 - his coverage grade was in the low 60s but he tackled well and supported in run defense. Correa graded well - really improved his tackling between week 1 and 2 but only got a 52.6 in coverage grade which dragged his overall score down. Though I've been vocal about Hudauri Hines not being the best he did adequately today at 66+. Same with Jojo Hayden and Breeon Ishmail. Hayden and Ishmail earned high run defense grades but Ishmail did not provide the best pass rushing score.
On the flipside Don Saunders earned a horrible 46.9 grade with only a 54 coverage score; Ian Jeffries surprisingly also earned a 55 grade missing several tackles (sub 40 grade). Jaden Mangham also did not impress with a 52.8 grade (pretty bad numbers across the board). No one's pass rushing numbers looked good at all even at small snap counts. Trey Smith did okay at 26 snaps. Jeremy Lewis took the most DE snaps at 36 - but did not grade particularly well at pass rushing. He did grade excellently, however, at run defense and tackling.
The grades have moved a bit as I've been looking at them - PFF must not have cemented the score just yet.
Extras:
It sucks that George Burhenn is likely hurt and won't contribute. De'Nylon Morrissette is also one of the most strangely overhyped players in recent memory. It is also sad that Elo Modozie has not carved out a role for himself yet.
