Rubin is correct in his statement that the most disturbing part of the game was the obvious fact that once the 45 yard FG was missed, there was zero doubt in my mind that Texas would run the ball down the throats of the OSU defense for a score. I sat in that stadium, and after seeing the front 6 get throttled in the run game in the previous TD drive, you could palpably feel that the OSU run D was overmatched and/or lacked the determination of the Texas O. After watching similar OSU runs debacles in person through the decades, including OSU v Wisconsin in 1999 (Up 17-0, OSU allowed 42 consecutive 2nd half points and 4 Ron Dayne TDs) and OSU at Michigan in 2021 (UM ran at will down our throats in the 4th Q), I turned to the Buckeye fans sitting next to me and said, “I’ve seen this movie before, and it does not end well.” Sooooo disappointing to see the OSU run D almost quit or at least become impotent for the entire 4th Q. This offseason, I made the unpopular observation that I was not believing in the Matt Patricia hype after last season’s IU and UMiami game plans. Sadly, I’m even more convinced that Patricia and the personnel he has chosen to play in big moments are not “all that”. No “sky is falling” here, just being realistic. Bad 2nd half coaching on both sides of the ball after momentum was in our favor has become a trend, and a D incapable of getting off the field on big 3rd downs is a bad trend that could destroy this season.
