Passing Offense Fixable?
Summary
QB/LB: It sounded to me like this offense puts a lot of decision making on Nico.
It sounded to me like this offense puts a lot of decision making on Nico. I believe Kennedy said before that the QB has multiple plays to choose from based on the defensive look. I think savvy defenses can take advantage of this by disguising things and confusing the qb, especially in Nico's first couple games in the offense. I think the staff will start to simplify things for Nico, and at the same time Nico will get more comfortable making these calls, which should improve everything. From what I saw, Nico's accuracy wasn't the problem. The problem was his reads weren't good and he was throwing to covered guys. Also, we were not decisively attacking downfield. In the first half, I don't think Nico had a completion that traveled more than 8 yards in the air. SDSU was sitting on everything short, and we only averaged like 3.7 ypc with our backs. Most of the pass plays were horizontal. I think against that defense the bread and butter needs to be run and playaction downfield, not run and horizontal/short passes.
