Syracuse remains winless in conference play after setback at Boston College
Summary
Injury: Syracuse fell 2-0 to Boston College in their second ACC game of the season, keeping the Orange winless in conference play.
Syracuse fell 2-0 to Boston College in their second ACC game of the season, keeping the Orange winless in conference play. It was Syracuse's first game on the road since their opener against UConn on August 20th, ending a five-game home stretch. Despite the loss, the Orange largely managed to control possession by winning the midfield battle thanks to Nathan Scott and Kelvin Da Costa successfully covering wide swathes of territory in a busy night for both midfielders. As a result, they earned several more chances than Boston College, but they struggled to break through a solid defensive Eagles formation that successfully limited dangerous chances. Still, Syracuse came close to scoring a few times in the first half but were thwarted by Boston College goalkeeper Andrej Borack, who was named to the ACC's preseason watch list. Borack came through with an impressive one-handed save on a strong header from Jordan Grey on a cross by Sachiel Ming. Pedro Guli looked like he scored in the 38th minute, but after barely avoiding a collision with the forward, Andrej Borack managed to just push the ball to the right of the goal to keep the game level heading into the second half. Despite the run of play favoring the Orange, Boston College was the one to ultimately break through in the 53rd minute. Eagles forward Michael Asari managed to hold onto a cross that nearly went over his head with a good jumping touch with his chest, and despite heavy pressure from Scott and left back Garrett Holman, he threaded the ball through the near post past a diving Kyle Jansen. After the first goal, the pace of play largely swung in Boston College's favor, as a Syracuse side under heavy pressure lost some of their tactical cohesiveness. The Orange attempted to overload the Eagles, sending more players upfield in an attempt to find an equalizer, but that ultimately left them more vulnerable to counters as the game wore on. Boston College earned a corner kick off one of these counters in the 66th minute, leading to a bit of a scramble for a loose ball in front of goal. An attempted clearance from Syracuse defender Buster Honeywood ended up at the feet of the Eagles' Moritz Gundelach, who quickly passed to Russell Brown, who buried the ball in the net for B.C.'s second goal. While Syracuse did regain composure after the second goal, Borack continued to deny them at every turn. Bryson Rodriguez seemingly finally beat the Serbian keeper in the 84th minute, but defender Devon Galluzzo headed the shot away for a goal-line clearance, helping his team complete the clean sheet. Syracuse will try to bounce back Tuesday in a road game closer to home against Colgate in Hamilton, N.Y.
