BOULDER — Colorado quarterback Julian Lewis enjoyed the best performance of his young college career on Saturday, accounting for five total touchdowns and 366 passing yards against Weber State.
Lewis began the day by throwing a 66-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Moore Jr. Then on the second play of Colorado's next offensive drive, he connected with Joseph Williams for a 63-yard touchdown. The Buffs' second-year starting quarterback added two more passing TDs and a rushing score in the first half before giving way to Kaneal Sweetwyne.
According to CU, Lewis either set or tied at least 10 school records, including passing yards in a quarter (212) and touchdown passes by a freshman (four). The Big 12 Conference honored Lewis on Monday by naming him its Freshman of the Week.
Here's what Lewis said after his historic showing on Saturday:
Returning to Folsom
"It felt amazing being back in Boulder. Boulder's fans always come out and show out. I think it was a packed house for playing a team of that level. It was amazing being back at home for sure."
Ultimate goals
"Two and zero is not the end goal. Ultimately, we all want to be Big 12 champions and national champions and have a chance to really compete against those types of guys."
No carry-over from Georgia Tech
"I wouldn't say that last game had anything to do with today. I think every week is a new week to prove yourself. Like I said, I think God gave me an opportunity to come out here and perform today, so I was just blessed looking at that and happy for the results."
Wide receiver depth
"It's a blessing and a curse having all the guys I have out wide… Those guys are always open. They always find a way to get open. It's just every week trying to find a way to get them the ball. When those guys get in the space, there's nothing you can really do about it."
On Joseph Williams
"He's truly a specimen out there. I think Jo's size really helps with our wide receiver room, because we have a lot of smaller guys, so people have to really worry about that deep game. And he makes people have to back up, and that's all you can ask for."
Thoughts on CU's coaching staff
"The coaches are amazing. I think having the experience you have in our department of the building is just so understanding, just because they've been in that situation, they've been in the shoes. Not exactly the same, but you can get a good point of view. It's been great having them around. We're still trying to grow, though."
On offensive coordinator Brennan Marion
"Coach Marion brings a different factor to the game. He's a winner, and winners have different emotions and things like that. Especially coming from a player-coach, like he used to play. He was great when he played, so he has high expectations for us. Him setting that bar high makes us set that bar high for ourselves. You can like it if you want. You can hate it if you want. But you're gonna win."
Love for the offensive line
"I love my big guys. As y'all can see, we're sitting back there comfortable. The running game's hitting crazy, and all you can ask for as a quarterback is time to throw the ball, and they've been providing that every week. So, (I'm) just blessed. I took those guys out to eat this week. I'm consistently trying to feed those boys, keep them big, keep them thick."
