Jack Bousum was limited due to his injury from the Bryant game. He suited up but only played one or two snaps. He was sorely missed. However, Kody Harris-Miller did play a lot but not on every down. He rotated out and in frequently. USF keyed-in on his rotations and typically ran the middle run delay handoff to great effect whenever Harris-Miller wasn't in. The second half saw two VERY disappointing offensive drives, both of which could have put the game away. The first drive of the second half began with USF flagged for "disconcerting signals". This gave Army a 1st and 5. Army picks up the 1st BUT get flagged for deadball personal foul so back up 15 yards with 1st and 10. Then they proceed to a 3rd and 2. USF lines up strong right and leave the A gap uncovered. Easy B Back in A gap right? Wrong! Army runs QB keeper straight into the stacked strong side for no gain and has to punt. The second drive is the one you mentioned. USF attempts onside kick and fails, giving Army a short field with just over 3 minutes on the clock. SURELY the offense can close the game here right? Nope. First play is a busted play between GP and Hellums that gains maybe a yard. Second play a no-brainer to defend QB keeper for 2. 3rd down is a sack for -6. I knew at this point we were looking at a mirror of the Tulsa game last fall. One other thing - my seat from Healy Club was a beautiful view of the LOS on the USF 4th and 6. When the teams lined up with Army showing Cover 0 I was screaming for a timeout. I simply could not believe the DC would gamble that Army's DBs could hang 1-on-1 deep against the USF receivers. But he did and the QB seized the gift for an easy TD. The season is early. It's not panic time. There was a lot of both good and bad in this game, which Army should have won. But if it isn't fixed soon we'll see this scenario (similar to 2025) pan out frequently this season. The onus is on the offense. They HAVE to figure out how to put games away. This used to be a signature of Monken teams but, for some reason, Army has forgotten how to keep the foot on the gas, run up scores, and never ease off on offense. The young defense needs the breathing space to grow and only dominating offensive possessions and scoring can provide that.
