Illinois guard TJ McMillen is out for the season with a foot fracture, Bret Bielema said. He had been starting for Brandon Henderson, who was already sidelined by a lower-body injury. Illinois finished the Duke game using deeper guard options, including Dezmond Schuster and Brandon Hansen; the interview does not provide Henderson's return date.

Illinois' Ca'Lil Valentine and Aidan Laughery combined for 93 yards on 28 carries against Duke, with no run reaching 10 yards. The fourth-quarter ground game produced 22 yards on ten attempts. Barry Lunney Jr. wants better starts to runs and more second-level gains; depleted guard depth and weak late execution limited the offense's ability to sustain drives.

Illinois failed on all three fourth-quarter possessions with a chance to retake the lead, ending in two turnovers on downs and a Katin Houser interception. Lunney accepted responsibility for calls and execution and is reviewing play volume and communication. His comments do not announce a reduced playbook; strong early scoring did not translate into late-game efficiency.

Illinois' tackling improved from the opener but remained inconsistent against Duke; the article cites 13 missed tackles from PFF. Bobby Hauck wants defenders to defeat blocks, pursue and finish after the first missed attempt. Limited live tackling in camp provided context, not an excuse to treat the run-defense problem as solved.

Illinois is still testing Jakwon Morris, Tywan Cox and Tanner Heckel at corner opposite Juice Clarke. Hauck described different demands against UAB's isolated man-coverage looks and Duke's heavier sets, which pulled defensive backs into run fits. The secondary is still adjusting; the veteran returners do not mean every role or coverage exchange is settled.
