AMES – Iowa State's offense scored just one touchdown in a road loss on Saturday at rival Iowa, but the Cyclones were able to reach scoring position multiple other times in their 16-13 loss to the rival Hawkeyes. Following Saturday's loss at Iowa and prior to the Cyclones' home game vs. Bowling Green in Week 3, ISU offensive coordinator Tyler Roehl met with local media on Tuesday. Below is a full transcript of his presser. On hitting on explosive plays A lot, a big thing, my message on Sunday was we gotta win the moment of truth. And that could be at the line of scrimmage, shoot up, the moment of truth could just be the communication on the sideline, breaking the huddle, and coming to the line of scrimmage. The moment of truth could be a catch, could be a throw, could be pass protection. And for instances, especially in that type of ball game, the margin of victory is so small, so small. And you could look at eight to ten plays where if just one person was four more inches in the correct position, it's a big play. But no, you look at the grand scheme of the totality of work, the last two games, and there's some that are very close. I just even go back to the first game, the first three plays, all could have been touchdown. So we're continuing to work and just gonna keep putting our best foot forward and have a sense of urgency to get better. On the offensive line's play early in the season Yeah, they did a good job. I still think there's moments where we need to have better leverage at the line of scrimmage. I think the intent, the effort is to standard. But there's technique and a few things where we still need to clean up. At the end of the day, it wasn't good enough. We need to win, and happy, but not even close to satisfied. I think there's growth, there's been good growth, but there's still a few things that we need to clean up to play to our standard. On his evaluation of play calls on first and second down Yeah, it was very run heavy. And I look at field position and where we're at. And in the second half when we started drives, three inside the ten-yard line, two inside the five. Those are really hard situations and situations that we need to improve upon. Because if you can get a couple first downs out of one of those drives, that's field position, that's huge. So you kind of go back and forth, what's gonna put us in the best position to win, but no, it's been addressed. And in my mind, as I'm sitting up there and calling the plays, you continue to evaluate, look at what you're doing, how you're progressing through series, what are you on P and 10. But at those moments, I just felt those were putting us in the best situation. On the passing offense, the passing attack being more efficient Yeah, it's so close. And we talked about the explosive plays earlier and moment of truth. And it's really close. There are certain things that we have worked on that we have not yet activated. Didn't feel like they've been the best against these defenses that we faced. So I'm excited to continue to grow. So we do have better efficiency. It's necessary for us to have better rhythm, put drives together, and continue to put the ball in the guy's hands when we need it to come On Aiden Flora Yeah, he takes coaching very well. He's very coachable. He is hard on himself, but he holds himself to a really high standard. And that's all of us. We didn't go there for participation trophy. We went there to win. And he played to a good standard, a high standard. But like I said earlier, it just wasn't good enough. And for him, he's very demanding of himself. In all situations, I can beat myself up over the first, third, and one call. But at the end of the day, if we're gonna be what we want to be and who we want to be, we need to convert. And I know he puts a lot of pressure on himself. And he's gonna continue to learn, grow, and have progress. On Vince Benetti Yeah, he's done an unbelievable job. When I was here in 24, he was a defensive lineman and then got transitioned. But he's very new to this position, a year and a half. And to play that position within this system and everything that is demanded, and I know I've talked about it before, but everything in the run game, the technique, understanding who you're going against, their tendency, just seeing their stance, their alignment, where my help may be, where the ball wants to hit. And then the pass game, and the protections in the pass game. So there's a lot, he's had a lot of growth, and he's made plays. I know there's one that he'd want back down in the red zone. But he's had a lot of growth, and he's learning, growing each and every day. But another thing, I've just seen really good leadership out of him. From the totality of the offense and him just bringing energy and leadership, and that's what we need. On if he feels like he is still learning his players, how to use them All of them, we're all learning each other still. And you prepare for all these situations in spring ball and fall camp. But until the lights are on, and I'm sure I said this going into week one, until the lights are on, you really don't know how they're going to respond. The decision that they're going to make, the intent with how they're going to play. You have an expectation, you have a standard. But how it really happens, you don't know. There's still growth. I mean, every single team in college football now is still growing every single day. And the best teams get better every single week, and that's what we need to do. And I appreciated their effort today at practice. They went out there with an open mindset to improve and get better and have a sense of urgency, because we're going to continue to confront and demand excellence on everything. On Jaylen Raynor and running Yeah, it's been good, it's been solid. In game one, there was a couple situations where he scored touchdowns for us, proper read, seeing his key. And there's more even just from him being a ball carrier, how you're affecting defenders and defenses even after the mesh is huge. The mesh with the running back, checking things at the line of scrimmage, that's the run game. I mean, there's so much that's on his plate, but it's been good. And there's still things that we have not yet activated that I just, we all didn't feel was best against these defensive structures in game one and game two, that I'm excited to continue to utilize in the right situations. On how still learning his players affects play calling Yeah, I don't think it's very difficult. I trust my gut, trust the players. Then it just comes down to the moment of truth and executing. So for us, no, yes, there's growth every single week, every single day. But it doesn't hinder or enter my mindset when calling those plays. On how the WRs can help the offense improve Yeah, it's all of it. Being on your spot on time, outrunning the rush. It's the protection, it's the throw, it's the catch, it's all of it. Are we activating the proper schemes versus the proper coverages? Are we giving him the most efficient opportunities? And that's where there are things that we have worked on that we can continue to still activate and utilize to properly put the guys in a position to have success. On Omari Hayes Yeah, consistent, steady, ability to win, win the moment of truth, third and three, that catch, that was unbelievable. The second play of the game, just the easy hitch converting for eight yards, seven yards, ability to make someone miss, very sure handed. He's done a good job, done a really good job. And he's a guy that has provided, again, good leadership within the team. Veteran leadership, poise, you've never seen the kid waver, flinch for one second, he's a competitor. And we need to continue to utilize him and find the right opportunities for him.
