Darryll Desir's penultimate performance as a freshman is a sign of what could be in Year 2
Summary
QB/DL: Florida State defensive lineman Darryll Desir stepped into a significantly larger role in the final two games of his freshman campaign.
Florida State defensive lineman Darryll Desir stepped into a significantly larger role in the final two games of his freshman campaign. The results were mixed. But the good was very, very good. Signs of promise were flashed late in the season by Desir, the second half of the twin combo that was highlighted in Year 1 by Mandrell Desir. Mandrell had 6.5 sacks and drew the deserved attention of the standout rookie campaign. Yet Darryll Desir – 15 tackles, 1 sack, and 20 QB Pressure per PFF – is going to be relied on in a large capacity in his sophomore season, perhaps as much as Mandrell when FSU aims to go with a little more speed off the edge to go along with transfer Rylan Kennedy.  If you're searching for reasons for optimism regarding Desir, look no further than the penultimate game of the 2025 season versus NC State. In that outing, Desir took on an increased role after averaging 15.3 snaps the prior three games (compared to 24.2 snaps per game in the seven earlier contests. Desir, at NC State, got his first career start and managed 7 tackles with 0.5 TFL in addition to 5 QB Pressures. In the contest, Desir had his highest Pass Rush Grade of the season (76.1) while displaying a notable mixture of strength and agility to generate disruptive reps while speeding up the quarterback.  Going back through the NC State contest, there was a strong baseline established of effort and strength. Even against the run. Really, the main detriment to his game showed up – and this was exposed far more often the following week at Florida – was hand usage and some guessing on gaps.  Both of those elements SHOULD get better with more technical experience and in-game reps.  Desir had some bright moments at times throughout his entire rookie campaign. But the NC State contest was by far his most complete showing, and it displayed him being a plus player with the ability to steadily disrupt. If he can harness that level of play consistently in 2026, then Desir will be a huge piece of the puzzle for the Seminoles.
