Recounting and some additional perspective as we turn the page
Summary
QB/OL: The troubling thing is they were all big plays, which is great, but not sustainable, especially as talent becomes equal.
Yeah agreed. The troubling thing is they were all big plays, which is great, but not sustainable, especially as talent becomes equal. Our down to down success rate metrics has been atrocious. Our EPA without explosives is -.31/play. That is significantly below avg. football is won situationally, 3rd/4th downs and in the redzone, big plays are the cherry on top. So yes, we were better, and something to build off, but still need the down to down piece. They were good in pass pro against Boise. Run blocking wasn’t good. That’s part experience, part are they physically ready to go move grown men. Addison, Utu specifically, do they have the strength. Iuli is awful at run blocking, always has been. Fox is year 3, so he should have the strength. I put the OL struggles squarely on the coaches. There is no excuse to roll out this bad of a line against ok st. They have seen these players for multiple years and only brought in Bennett. That is unacceptable. Dan is loyal to a fault. It’s been a pattern for years. It’s time he makes some hard decisions. I don’t disagree with anything you say here. Pressure isn’t the number 1 thing I see wrong, it’s fundamental issues. It’s year 5 and we don’t have a linebacker who can scrap over the top or ID the correct gaps. We never have an Answer for the QB run unless it’s blatantly obvious on tape, ie Demond. First drive against Boise and Maddox gets 6 for an easy conversion. Mendoza last year in game one is the reason we lost. Those are inexcusable coaching mistake. On pressure, the bigger issue is turning pressure into sacks. Do we need to get more pressure this year, yes, but we got pressure on Drew. We hit or touched him on 3 of the TDs. Williams hit him on the long TD pass(he takes a terrible looping angle for no reason), Tayo had him on the last TD and he escaped, Wyatt (I believe) touched him when he missed the strip sack. I have a massive issue with our pressure packages, it’s been so glaring for years on film. We do not confuse the line or mess with their line rules. It’s mind blowing how many 5 man pressures we run that straight down. I won’t go into this further but curious if you’ve watched or noticed this over the years? It’s frustrating. I think we have a glaring hole at edge. Wyatt needs to play more. How are we on year 4 with Tatum, Tayo, and no one else. Neither guy has ever put on tape the ability to win quick with speed or power. Tayo walked into half those year 1 sacks. Why don’t we have more bodies that can win outside of Wyatt. Another Dan loyal to a fault issues I’ve seen. He is a defensive guy and our defense has never been good enough. It’s too predictable and easily manipulated. It’s littered all over the tape, and the rematch results are the evidence. He has never brought in guys with new ideas. He hires tite/mint guys. I think this is the number one more glaring issue. The fact that ther defense, his calling card, has never been good enough is a huge red flag we can’t ignore. He has always looked good against inferior competition. There’s just too much tape of these issues to ignore. He hasn’t been helped out. Pass pro has been bad for 2 years. Our coaching isn’t helping him. Our game plans have been terrible this year.OC has done nothing to help him identify things presnap. I haven’t seen one thing that gives me confidence he has command over the office or can see the field. We are in the wrong play too often, it’s year 2, he should be checking us into the right play. Look at Bo year too. It was so obvious the progression he made early. Dante looks like he has regressed, which I think is a confidence issue, due to the coaching.
