Depth Chart Notes/Changes
Quarterback
Khristian Martin and Jayden Mandal shared the priority reps, though there was a tendency for Martin to go first, followed by Mandal. Mandal saw action with both the 1 and 2 offense while Martin was mostly with the 1s.
The other three quarterbacks saw action in a variety of orders. But Deagan Rose was the one QB who got a series with the first-team unit, signalling him as the closest to potentially bridge the gap from the older QBs to the younger ones.
Running Backs
Nothing unexpected from the RBs.
Wide Receivers
Harold Duvall saw extra first-team action - first in Ezekiel Avit’s spot, then later in Josiah Freeman’s. Last year Duvall spent the year primarily playing behind Freeman until the last couple of weeks. Jahlil McClain and Jordan Malau’ulu both saw a lot of action.
It’s tough to pencil out, but Keynan Cotton and Isaia Dillon both saw reps and appear to be pushing from outside the two-deep.
Tight Ends
Brock Lium and Jake Appleget saw the majority of first-team reps. Jace Nixon also saw a lot of action.
Gavin Correia has been getting a lot of praise as of late. I didn’t spot him taking a whole ton of reps though. There was one I-Formation set run by the Bulldogs under center where Correia was the fullback.
Dallas Gaius-Anyegbu saw one opportunity with the first-team unit as a sign that he may have an opportunity to contribute this year.
Offensive Line
The biggest change from start of spring to the end has come on the offensive line.
The Bulldogs went into spring expecting Marquis Thorpe-Taylor to be the next right guard. But in the second half of camp, Jonah Leaupepetele made a strong push for the job. So much so that Leaupepetele spent the entire spring preview as the first-team right guard and that Thorpe-Taylor had made the move to the second-team left tackle spot.
As we mentioned previously, the dominos have also moved Marsel Akins from LT2 to LG2, which is likely a better fit for the 6-foot-3 lineman in this scheme.
There was one other unexpected change. Bode Stoddard, who appeared to open camp on the outside looking in at tackle, has now entered the equation at right guard. He spent the spring preview as the second-team right guard.
These developments largely left super-seniors Gino Quinones and Pat Barnett running with the third-team line.
It appeared Oscar Weigel took virtually all the first-team center snaps with Braylan Henderson as C2. I'd expected competition there in the fall still.
Defense
If you were eyeing the defense, the D took a slightly different approach. For most of the scrimmage, they mixed and matched different units within the defense. So often the first-team defensive line was with the second-team linebackers or the second-team D-Line was with the starting defensive backs. The D-Line and secondary rotated a lot every few plays while the linebackers when drive for drive.
Defensive Line
As mentioned, the D-Line shuffled A LOT. And a lot of the pieces about 12 deep look interchangeable.
When the offense and defense went good-on-good late in the scrimmage, the defense sent out a D-Line that was: Xepera-Laffitte-Owusu-Hampsten. Hampsten and Laffitte would team up for a sack on that drive. Coach Entz picked out Xepera specifically as one of the players on defense that has stepped up as a leader this spring. Of course, Jahzon Jacks is a leader on the line. Hampsten and Noa were both in on third down situations. Those six names may likely be the top tier of the D-Line. There was also a steady dose of Noah Yeh, Mordecai Hines, Jauris Satele, Logan Goodspeed, and Auckland Asiata rotating in that second group that I expect we’ll see a lot of.
Linebackers
As mentioned, Logan Studt was a no go. Not 100 percent on the state of the depth behind Tytus Khajavi and K’Vion Thunderbird. It appeared to me that Justin Johnson was most frequently joined by Kavika Baumgartner in that second group, followed by Tommy Nix and Lucas Blumling as the third duo.
Nickelbacks
No surprises here, though Jonavan Darrington saw quite a bit of action for having just moved to this position in the last couple of days. He and Isaiah Lucero appeared to split the third-team reps.
Cornerbacks
Largely as expected here. Kiontre Harris and Loyall Mouzon shared some of the first-team reps, then played together with the first group at times - I’m sure they wanted to avoid any injuries for Jomarion Briggs. I saw more of Andre Cobb and less of Cam Cole than expected based on the some of the reports coming out of camp. Sammie Hunter was also on that list of competitors.
Safeties
A rotation of safeties saw action alongside Ethan Tierney. I believe Taylor Powell was out there with him first. In that good-on-good series late, it was RJ Regan. In another instance, Tierney was alongside Jaden Carrillo.
All three of those names appear viable after presumably a starting duo of Tierney and Ryan Wilson. Wilson missed all of spring. Croix Stewart and Gerayas Grimes were inactive today.
Special Teams
Menake Watanabe got the first field goal opportunity and was the only kicker with two attempts. All three kickers put a big leg into field goal attempts that missed wide. Watanabe had the only make on a collective 1-of-4 day from the unit.
We did not see the punt units make an appearance today.
