Scott’s thoughts: Three intriguing freshmen to watch vs. Murray State

Through two games, no true freshmen have seen the field for Oklahoma State, but entering Saturday's game against Murray State as 56.5-point favorites, it seems likely some Cowboy rookies could get in the game. Assuming the game, in some form, gets close to that point spread, it's likely a lot of new Cowboys make their debut in the 6 p.m. game on Saturday at Boone Pickens Stadium. The one everybody is most curious about is backup quarterback Brodie Vehrs, who seems quite likely to make his first appearance. But will he be the first quarterback in behind Drew Mestemaker, or will veteran Grant Jordan get the nod? Offensive coordinator Sean Brophy deferred to head coach Eric Morris regarding the QB2 decision, and since Morris had already concluded his interview by then, we'll all just have to wait and see.  But Vehrs isn't the only freshman fans are curious about. Here are three who could get their first game action as Cowboys this week, which could also help them begin working their way into more prominent roles. Three freshmen who could debut vs. Murray State Receiver Dayvon Standard Outside receiver depth hasn't really been tested, because Justin Bowick and Chris Barnes have played the vast majority of snaps. Barnes was injured Saturday, which opened the door for Terrence Lewis to boost in playing time, and Rodney Harris II made his Cowboy debut. Beyond that, the Pokes could use some more depth on the outside, and the 6-foot-4, 185-pound  Standard is a guy who was getting a lot of preseason talk. His height could be helpful down the line as well.  Running back KD Jones Jones was one of the most exciting signings in the eyes of the fans last December, and he's just waiting for his opportunity. As I've written about before, when we saw him in action early in preseason camp, he seemed to be a step behind others in pass blocking, so maybe that's one of the factors holding him back. But he's clearly a talented runner, and the backup running back spot hasn't provided much excitement through two games. Perhaps a few strong carries this week will improve Jones' chances of more opportunities in Big 12 play.  Offensive tackle Ja'Qwon Evans This not only seems like a deserved opportunity for the 6-foot-5, 295-pound freshman from Shawnee, but also a wise one. Evans was one of the more surprising names to pop up on the Week 1 depth chart, slotting in as the backup left tackle. Obviously, he wasn't a true No. 2, since both Desmond Magiya and Shaun Torgeson played the position when starter Jacob Sexton went down in the opener. And when Braydon Nelson is healthy again — potentially in the next couple weeks, but almost certainly for the UCF game on Oct. 10 — he's another candidate for the left tackle job. But injuries have been a serious concern for the Cowboys' offensive line. Sexton is out for the year, Nelson has yet to see the field and Joseph Hanson's status remains unknown. So it seems like a great time to roll out the rookie and get him some live snaps in case injuries eventually force him into action.
