Summary
Pick/market: Rutgers can find the money for Schiano’s buyout.
scottsdaleal said... (original post) If a change is made, the NIL resources and institutional support provided will be just as important if not more so than the salary. Assuming t... show more Rutgers can find the money for Schiano’s buyout. The more interesting question is whether Brian Kelly’s LSU buyout could actually make the transition financially manageable. If Kelly’s LSU agreement allows his future coaching compensation to offset what LSU owes him, Rutgers wouldn’t necessarily have to pay anything close to a traditional $10 million salary. For example, let’s say Rutgers structures Kelly’s compensation at $3 million per year, with LSU responsible for the remaining amount necessary to satisfy its contractual obligation to him. Rutgers would then be paying Kelly roughly $3–4 million less annually than the approximately $6–7 million it otherwise would have been paying Schiano. That annual savings could effectively be redirected toward paying Schiano’s buyout over the same five-year period. In simplified terms: Kelly: ~$3M/year from Rutgers LSU obligation: potentially ~$7M/year to Kelly Rutgers savings vs. Schiano: ~$3–4M/year Redirect those savings toward Schiano/staff exit costs over five years. Obviously, the contracts would have to be examined closely because mitigation, offsets, timing and assistant-coach obligations matter. But conceptually, this is why I don’t think people should automatically dismiss Kelly as financially impossible. And from a football standpoint, you’re potentially reallocating essentially the same pool of money from a coach who went 23–27 from 2022–25 to one who went 34–14 over those exact same seasons, despite LSU playing schedules ranked roughly 12th, 17th, 10th and 22nd/23rd nationally, compared with Rutgers at 36th, 14th, 38th and 22nd. If the contract language makes an offset structure possible, Rutgers should at least explore it. You could potentially absorb Schiano’s buyout while hiring a coach with a significantly stronger recent winning résumé without dramatically increasing the annual football coaching expenditure..
