There will NEVER be a call of encroachment on the defense in college football- it literally does not exist. All defensive penalties (edit- penalties involving the neutral zone) are lumped into offsides- and it can be a free play or called dead depending on what occurs. Sadly, this is often at the discretion of the ref. I agree- there should have been a clear whistle- that is the bigger issue. As soon as our O lineman moved, it is a dead ball penalty (per the official NCAA rule book page 86). https://www.ncaa.org/championships/playing-rules/football-playing-rules/ If you can point to an area of the rule book that supports what you posted I will gladly admit wrong! But, that is not what the NCAA rule book says regarding offsides penalties in college football. Edit: To further add- if anyone doesn’t want to sort through the rule book (which admittedly is boring lol)- just google “offside rule difference nfl vs college football”- you will get the same explanation.
