Gopher Gridiron Radio 9.17.26 | Minnesota vs. Akron Preview
Summary
Pick/market: When it comes to the penalties, I thought the SEC crew called a tight game in the first half, but at least they were consistently tight for both teams.
When it comes to the penalties, I thought the SEC crew called a tight game in the first half, but at least they were consistently tight for both teams. The second half wasn’t the same. It felt like they were still calling things tight on the Gophers but letting the Bulldogs play. Specifically, on the TJ Thomas angle route and the Javon Tracy fade in the back of the end zone, they were literally getting tackled while the ball was still in the air. Ultimately, because the Gophers played so poorly in the first half, those missed calls didn’t matter in the final outcome. As for the Akron game, I’m with Burns — I want to see them treat this like a Big Ten game and do whatever is necessary to win. If they need to go 5‑WR empty and run hoss‑Y‑juke to Jennings on 3rd‑and‑2, or bring in a sixth offensive lineman and go shotgun wing‑T with Tracy at QB and run punt‑return‑right and punt‑return‑left, then do it. Just find ways to get the ball to your best players. If they’re able to get up by 21 or more, then I’m totally fine with working on inside zone and the run game. The last thing I want to see is them ending up in a 12–10 game in the fourth quarter because they spent the entire afternoon running into a nine‑man box with seven blockers.
