Full Speed, Clear Heads: Southern Miss Faces UConn’s Pressure
Summary
- Blake Anderson says Southern Miss wants to restore more tempo against UConn after deliberately slowing down to limit Auburn's possessions. Execution remains the constraint: Cefalo identified a missed protection on the opening pick-six and wants Ethan Hampton to hold the pocket, work through progressions and move only when the play calls for it. - Southern Miss' interior line is working with Aloali'i Maui at right guard, Gregg Nunnery at left guard and Joe Rounds at center. Luke Rogers backs up Rounds; Zerian Hudson and Toby Mealer work at second-team right and left guard. The report describes emerging practice stability after earlier guard shuffling, not a newly confirmed game-day lineup. - Davis Dalton has returned to Southern Miss practice. Jaylon Himes is improving after playing through an ankle issue in the first two games; Anderson estimated his earlier level at 80%-90% and said he looked better Tuesday. That suggests improved receiving options, but does not establish full recovery or an unrestricted Saturday workload. - Southern Miss RB Robert Briggs remains in a yellow noncontact jersey with a hamstring injury aggravated while accelerating against Alcorn State. Anderson calls him a game-time decision, so the offense cannot assume his speed will be available against UConn. - Anderson describes UConn as a downhill four-man-front defense built around press quarters, with blitzes and Cover 3 rotations under Ryan Manalac. Maryland was held to 125 rushing yards on 36 carries, but completed 35 of 42 passes for 350 yards. That shows contrasting recent run and pass results, not a guarantee Southern Miss can handle the same pressure. Comment: Discussion asks: Upper tier WAC team?
? Upper tier WAC team? We are the team with all the JC guys? We were raiding the JC’s during the summer and bringing guys in. Some of them are starting for us.I guess I’m confused.I watched every play of the Connecticut game vs Maryland and that was a 10 point game with two minutes to go in the third..Truth of the matter is let’s hope our OLine can stay on sides and not miss assignments like last week or this week could be ugly. Their QB can flat out move and their OLine is definitely as good as Auburns. We will see.
