From a purely football perspective, yeah, more ball is good. The problem is that (at least for now), these are still students, and school starts in early-mid January, so the season, and by extension the portal, extending deep into January is a real problem for roster building. There's a deadline on when players can join teams and still be academically eligible, and it's bad for both the coaches and the players if they play in the playoffs, and then have to spend a frantic weekend finding a school to go to, getting enrolled, moving their whole life, and being ready for classes on Monday morning. Enforcing an earlier end to the season is better for players and for the programs themselves.
