John Mateer and Brent Venables Against P4 Opponents
Summary
QB/LB: Someone on this board shared an insightful analysis of Mateer’s passing stats against P4 opponents while at Wazzou (and particularly his downfield passing numbers), back when Mateer was considered the #1 portal QB.
Someone on this board shared an insightful analysis of Mateer’s passing stats against P4 opponents while at Wazzou (and particularly his downfield passing numbers), back when Mateer was considered the #1 portal QB. Net message: Mateer tore up lesser competition with short passes / high YAC and the pace of the Wazzou offense, more than effective downfield passing (especially as the quality of opponent increased). It was also a condemnation of Arbuckle’s offense as little more than a typical Air Raid derivative that won with pace and better athletes in space than scheme and technique. I filed it away in the back of my mind since then, and it seems to be manifesting itself the more the sample size at OU increases. A real shame
