The Arkansas defense struggled to contain Utah senior dual-threat quarterback Devon Dampier last Saturday, and it doesn't get any easier for the Hogs as they now prepare for another dual-threat quarterback in Georgia fifth-year Gunner Stockton. Arkansas opens up (1-1, 0-0, SEC) opens up SEC play this Saturday against No. 2 Georgia (2-0, 0-0, SEC) at 11 a.m. (CDT) on ABC.
In 2025, the 6-1, 215-pound quarterback completed 269 of his 386 pass attempts (69.7%) for 2,894 yards, 24 touchdowns and five interceptions. Stockton also used his legs 129 times for 462 yards (3.6 avg.) and 10 rushing touchdowns as he led the Bulldogs to a 12-2 record and the SEC Championship.
Through two games this season, Stockton has connected on 28 of his 32 passes (87.5%) for 436 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions. He's been more patient in the pocket this season and has only rushed once for three yards. While he hasn't relied on his legs as much early in the season, he still poses a dangerous threat as a rusher.
"They'll run every formation that possibly that's out there, so you know it's going to be the same thing, and it's going to be the same thing every week," Arkansas defensive coordinator Ron Roberts said. "It's this is the conference we're in, you've got to get your eyes in the right spot. You've got to get lined up.
"You've got to know what your key is, and you've got to go with second progression, who you snap your eyes to, and if you don't do that stuff, you're going to be lost. If you're a ball watcher, go get the ball. Whatever all those little things that people refer to, that's bad defense, I mean it's bad.
"I think we need to take a big step for us just about the discipline, about doing our job, trusting each other. I think that's part of it too. I think when the thing hit the fan at 14 points, we had guys trying to solve the problem. Am I trying to do somebody else's job? Now I'm not doing my job.
"I'm going to solve this. I'm going to go make plays, and then we had guys, and then you've got the crap hits the fan, and here you go. You've got nobody doing their job, and we spent the next quarter and a half trying to get them to calm down and just do your job. I think we'll respond the right way."
In Arkansas' embarrassing 43-10 loss at No. 17 Utah on Saturday, the Razorback defense struggled to contain Dampier as he completed 18 of his 24 passes (75%) for 261 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. On the ground, he had 49 yards on 11 attempts (4.5 avg.) and two touchdowns.
Stockton didn't emerge as a rusher until last season. In his first two years with the Bulldogs, he rushed only 32 times for 50 yards, and he actually rushed for -13 yards in 2024.
"He's got more threats now," Roberts said. "I thought he was very efficient with the ball and what he did. One of the best things you should probably see, and you haven't seen it this year because he hadn't had to do it.
"But the thing that he's probably made his most hay in the last year is when things do break down, his ability to extend a play, move the pocket, move the chains with his feet. He's very efficient. He can do that. He can run, and he doesn't make mistakes. When everything gets cloudy, he puts on his feet and goes and tries to get positive yardage and not put them in a bad situation."
"He runs their offense at a high, high level," Arkansas head coach Ryan Silverfield said on Monday. "I talk about our offense, I want it to be efficient. When you watch Georgia, they have balance. They line up and run the ball when they want to run the ball.
"They can line up and throw the five-yard out in the quick game, and then they line up and take the shots down the field when they need to. He's a quarterback that sits there and puts them in the best situation, whether it's first-and-10 or third-and-6 to have success. Obviously there's a reason why they lean so much on them to put them in the right spot."
