But the humans who directed this also left ways for the AI to break out. Apparently, in order to update software the AI has a backdoor connection to the internet. The agents exploited that once they decide the task given to them by the human was designed to be impossible unless they had access to outside the 'sandbox'. So while the AI agents did do really scary and creative things. The escape from the sandbox was also was the fault of the humans who designed the experiement with full knowlege the task was impossible within the sandbox and they left gaps in safety to access the internet.
