Summary
Vince Young created 85-point swing in Texas-OU rivalry over three years.
One of the biggest swings seen in any Longhorn rivalry was what happened in the Texas-Oklahoma rivalry during Vince Young’s three years as the starting quarterback. Doing the math for Young’s three appearances in the Red River game shows there was an 85-point swing from his redshirt freshman year (a 52-point loss, 65-13) to his junior year (a 33-point win, 45-12). In Young’s first game, Chance Mock drew the start. After two possessions with Texas trailing 7-0, Mack Brown inserted Young and it briefly sparked the Longhorn offense. Young led a 6-play, 44-yard touchdown drive that tied the score 7-7. Unfortunately the next time Young touched the ball, he threw an interception and things quickly unraveled. The Sooners led 37-13 at halftime and the rout was on. Young definitely showed flashes, finishing with 135 yards passing and 127 yards rushing. But his 262 yards of total offense were offset by 2 interceptions and 2 fumbles (1 lost). Although Young’s second OU game was much closer, a 12-0 loss, his numbers decreased, 86 passing and 54 rushing. It wasn’t until his third crack before he flipped the script. Young orchestrated an offense that outgained the Sooners 444 yards to 171. He passed for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns, and also gained another 45 yards on the ground. Besides stopping a 5-game losing streak, this Texas win was the first win in a stretch where Texas won 4 of 5 vs. Oklahoma.
