Gigem 247's Jeff Tarpley appeared on Your Afternoon Stretch with host Glenn "Stretch" Smith to discuss Texas A&M's big non-conference win over Arizona State. Smith asked him, "What were your takeaways from the way the Aggies really controlled this game?" I think the main thing was that Arizona State's Kenny Dillingham came into College Station with a reputation as a really good football coach. I don't think he left having coached up to that reputation. A&M loss Mike Elko just coached a very high-percentage football game, which is one of the things that I really want to see him do. He's got the resources so that people are going to find it hard to match up well against the Aggies. He was able to avoid the types of mistakes that Arizona State made. They had, I think, nine flags. A&M only had one. Arizona State had the four turnovers and two of them were turned directly into scores on returns. The fake punt call late in the second quarter from the Sun Devils….in particular, that really should have been worse for Arizona State than what it was. It was a fourth and short. They had called time out to stop the clock because they thought they were getting the ball back. They kept their defense out on the field at which point you would normally go "Hey, they're looking for the fake, they're looking for us to do something here, and so let's back off of that." Instead of just punting the ball or lining up and going for it….they had had some success running the ball against the Aggies….they tried to go for it, and A&M was ready for it. I thought that A&M was well prepared coming into the game, and they just set out to make fewer mistakes and play a cleaner game than what Arizona State did. It helped that they had the better players, but Elko did a better job of putting those players in position to win the game, and those players responded with fewer mistakes. That not only enabled them to win the game but blow Arizona State out.
