Arizona recorded six sacks and held Northern Arizona to minus-7 rushing yards in its opener. That is an encouraging early disruption result under Danny Gonzales, but it came against an FCS opponent and does not establish the same production against Northern Illinois.

After nine wins in 2025, Arizona retained its head coach, both coordinators and starting quarterback Noah Fifita. The preview identifies that leadership continuity as a strength entering 2026; it does not report a new play-caller, quarterback change or confirmed plan to rest starters against NIU.

Northern Illinois held Illinois State to 153 passing yards and intercepted two passes, following an interception against Iowa. NIU has finished in the FBS top 15 in passing yards allowed in each of the previous three seasons. Those results describe pass-defense production, not a guarantee against Arizona's passing attack.

NIU receiver DeAree Rogers caught 11 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown against Illinois State and added 59 punt-return yards. Telly Johnson again handled at least 20 carries; the returning running back averaged 5.74 yards per carry on 712 rushing yards last season. These are recent usage and historical production, not projected Arizona-game workloads.

NIU started true freshman Jack Murray and redshirt freshman Jashawn Nelson at linebacker in both opening games. Each has 18 tackles, according to the preview. The young starting pair is a concrete personnel feature; the writer's separate forecast that Arizona will exploit the defense remains opinion.
