Wayshawn Parker has been one of the best backs in the Big 12 and in college football. The Utes star ball carrier spoke to the media bout his recent success.
Question: You lead the country in touchdowns. You've obviously been doing it in all sorts of ways. How are you feeling about the season so far?
Wayshawn: I'm feeling very confident in the season and how it's going to go. Seeing how everything's been playing out, I'm thankful that the quarterback can even get me the ball. So that's all I'm praying to God for.
Question: What was going through your mind when Byrd threw that deep shot on the first play of the game?
Wayshawn: We practiced it. I told him if he throws the ball up to me, know I'm coming down with it. That's what he did, and I kept my promise.
Question: Wayshawn, what were your expectations of being involved in the receiving game this year? Last year you were just a primary back. You made some plays in the receiving game, but this year you're featured. Was that an expectation heading into the season? Is that something that you knew you had in your system?
Wayshawn: I mean, I knew I had it since I was raised up. My dad always told me that I got good hands. So I told Coach McGavin, we had a long talk, and he told me that he was going to put me in that passing game, and he's doing that.
Question: Is there any backs in the NFL that you model yourself after?
Wayshawn: My dream back was Frank Gore. Right now it's Christian McCaffrey.
Question: How do you think the offensive line did last game?
Wayshawn: They did wonderful. They showed out. They put their hearts into whatever they did, and they did it. So they went out, they ball out, and they made number 35 a big problem, uh, big problem, and Cedric Jefferson shut him down.
Question: After a big win against a program like Arkansas, an SEC program, how do you reset and refocus for the next week?
Wayshawn: I mean, it's just been the same. We focus on the next opponent. They're an SEC school, but at the same time, we see them as another team that we got to play.
Question: Wayshawn, it seems like this team is having a lot of fun on offense. Can you kind of walk through what that means just to be able to have that connection with everybody?
Wayshawn: It's very fantastic seeing everybody smile and have the chance to achieve their dreams, and what they want to do is very great. And then Devon getting the ball to everybody, not just one person, it seems great. It seems fantastic.
Question: Wayshawn, I know it was something you expected to have a good start to the season, but what's it been like to have, I mean, three touchdowns in both games? It's got to feel good at this point.
Wayshawn: It felt fantastic going home, seeing the recording of how I did, but I can still put more on the table. I could have had a 4th touchdown, but it's okay. I'm still aiming for more.
Question: Utah State Aggies coming to Rice-Eccles Stadium, not in the conference, but an in-state matchup. I mean, what does that mean to you to match up and have maybe people from all across the state come to Rice-Eccles and see this showdown?
Wayshawn: I mean, it's great seeing the opportunity. I see that as another team coming down. I see they had a great matchup last week. They did fantastic. So I just got to see them as another opponent. I can't look lower.
Question: Where do you feel like you can develop the most this season?
Wayshawn: Just being a leader. I mean, I'm still working on being a leader. I got that captain on my shoulder for a reason. So I'm going out there just teaching everybody what to do and how to do it.
Question: Will you have a passing touchdown by the end of the year? You've had a receiving, rushing, and will you throw a touchdown pass?
Wayshawn: Hopefully we can. We gotta talk to Mac G for that one.
