Summary
Injury: As aggravating a loss as we have had in quite some time.
As aggravating a loss as we have had in quite some time. We can't waste a defensive performance like that on a neutral field. Defense was awesome. Got put in horrible position, touchdowns on a 2 yard and 24 yard drive were the only touchdowns they gave up. Held them basically to just over 200 yards of offense. Incredible effort against a team with a lot of weapons. The way that we consistently biff the end of the first half is the most confounding thing ever. I have no idea what the solution is, but it is like everyone collectively forgets how to play and coach football for a while every week at the worst possible minute. Leroy Harris is as good a player we have had in a while, especially on the DL. Corey Gordon does some really good things. David Santiago was mostly good again, but whiffing on the QB on the last play finished our comeback chances, unfortunately. Trey is so solid. Oatis, Calvin, Smalls--lot of the unsung guys did good things in the middle of the DL. Todd has been a bit of a disappointment to me so far this year, tbh. Legit question, did Austin Alexander even play today? i don't remember seeing him do anything all game, and don't really recall seeing him on the field either. We are going to struggle more and more on offense the more these injuries add up. Willis, Cam, Cox (he came back, I know), Bruhn, Ballard--that is arguably the top guy at three of the four skill positions and the guy that lets you feel confident unleashing the top guy at the fourth. If they are all hurt for any length of time, it kills our ceiling on offense. Can't remember a game where turnovers and special teams had more of an impact. Great punt return kept us in it, terrible punt, kickoff return for TD, and the classic Dylan Edwards fumble at the worst possible moment were the whole difference in the game. Carpenter needs to spend some time on the pine. He really hurt the team today. Like that Clements has some dawg in him, but he just does not block very well sometimes. Edwards is one of the most maddening players of all time for me. So much raw talent and potential and just dumbass mistakes at the most inopportune times. It is no longer a fluke, it is a trend. Willis is a nice runner. Reminds me a little of James Sims without the hands out of the backfield. Just solid, tough, always grinding. No idea what the issue with Dupree is, but wish they would give him a little bit of a chance once in a while. Seemed like a nice runner when given the chance in week one, no reason he should be behind Micah Johnson IMO (I know Dupree was on the last injury report, but he played special teams and did not show up until the last injury report, so I don't buy that as an excuse/explanation). Zeke was finally given a chance to try to do some stuff and the line held up well enough to let him have a shot. He delivered pretty well, all things considered, and ran with considerably more confidence once he was ripping passes, too. His footwork is an absolute mess, though. When he steps into his throws and sees the receiver well, he can really throw. He just does that only like 2 out of every 5-7 passes. McMillan and Cox are legit. I would kill to have had those guys running alongside Grimm two years ago. Kubecka, on the other hand, singlehandedly cost the team a drive by being a dumbass. He has not been good yet this year, and if you aren't making plays you need to not do the sort of dumb he did today. Tate is going to be a guy that we have to just keep scheming opportunities for him to make plays. He softens the blow of Cam not being able to get his body right a bit. Butler made a few nice plays, other than the one that Zeke tried to get him a collapsed lung by hanging him to dry. Connington and Gill did not earn whatever we are paying them with their performance today. They can't be the thing that is costing the team points, period. That all being said above about the offense, if I were on defense I would want to fistfight them right now. That defense played their tails off. Hats off to them. Have some mild level of optimism about the remainder of the season, depending on the way the injury situation shakes out. Offense showed a little life late when we let Zeke cook, defense showed me plenty, and special teams has flashed enough positives that if they can just limit the stupid they can be a positive. We will win some more games this year, I think. Could see anywhere from 4 to 8 wins in play, because there are some not great teams left to play.
