After Michigan's UTEP win, Kyle Whittingham said analytics and his own judgment aligned on the fourth-and-5 attempt converted by Travis Johnson's reception. He assessed third- and fourth-down conversions together when describing the offense's success. That explains this decision, not a standing instruction to attempt every fourth-and-5.

Whittingham said Michigan wanted to get Tommy Carr game repetitions and praised his debut touchdown and productive, elusive runs against UTEP, describing him as quicker than he appears. The comments assess the reserve quarterback's performance, not a new quarterback competition or a change to Bryce Underwood's starting role.

Whittingham highlighted freshman defensive end Tariq Boney's quickness, explosiveness, developed strength and relentless pursuit after Michigan's UTEP game. He envisioned Boney and Carter Meadows as a future edge pairing. This was a developmental assessment, not an announcement that either would start or receive a fixed snap allocation.

Whittingham credited defensive tackle Jonah Lea'ea with diagnosing a screen, securing the interception and returning it for a touchdown against UTEP. His explanation identified recognition and execution by the defensive lineman, not a newly installed coverage or a change in Michigan's defensive alignment.
