Pick/market: NOTRE DAME, Ind.
NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Wideout Micah Gilbert snagged eight catches for 170 yards as No. 3 Notre Dame (3-0) won 27-10 over Michigan State (2-1). That increases the Fighting Irish's win streak to 13 victories— dating back to last season—all of which have come by double digits.
Still, the home team trudged along for much of the evening, settling for field goals on multiple instances in the 80th meeting in a storied rivalry between the two programs that dates back to 1897.
Notre Dame improves to 50-29-1 in the series.
Gilbert's performance represents the most receiving yards by a Fighting Irish wideout since Marcus Freeman became head coach. The previous high was an 8-catch, 136-yard Fiesta Bowl by Lorenzo Styles in a 37-35 loss to Oklahoma State.
It's also the most receiving yards by a Notre Dame player since Chase Claypool snagged nine catches for 180 yards and a touchdown in a 48-37 victory over Wake Forest in 2017.
Running back Nolan James also had a career day with 26 carries for 121 yards and a score. He also grabbed two catches for seven yards.
Quarterback CJ Carr went 18-of-24 (75%) for 234 yards. He also ran for a 3-yard touchdown.
The Fighting Irish outgained the Spartans by a 395-to-167-yard margin.
Linebacker Drayk Bowen led Notre Dame with eight tackles, but safety Luke Talich was the MVP of the defense. The 6-foot-4 defensive back recorded three tackles (1.5 for a loss), a sack, a pass breakup and a first-half interception.
Safety Adon Shuler also picked off a pass.
