Rutgers falls to USC: Takeaways, game balls and did you notice...
Summary
QB/OL: Agree with all the comments, exciting game, and two really bad passes by Lonergan killed momentum, taking away chances to score points, when driving the ball down the field.
Agree with all the comments, exciting game, and two really bad passes by Lonergan killed momentum, taking away chances to score points, when driving the ball down the field. Inexcusable. But, Lonergan also showed he moved well, ran for key yardage, and his pass to Allen was a beauty, with Allen then finishing it by running in for TD. Also, the offensive line, IMO, played their best game of the season, pass pro and run blocking. Just a quick side note, boy was AK. a lifesaver for our offense last year, with great decision making, timely running, and protecting the ball! Plus, overall, the defense played much better, with selective times stopping the run, yes, other times getting destroyed, with no one setting the edge, and questionable tackling. Coverages appeared to be pretty good, considering the USC QB talent, and serious lack of a pass rush by RU. IMO, sanders and Wright were true difference makers on the defense, did not realize until this game, just how much we missed and needed them vs. UMASS and BC. Hopefully, they are in the lineup, and healthy the rest of the season. My biggest disappointment, besides the loss, in the game, was the atrocious play call on the 4th and 1, as well as how poorly it was executed. KC, and all the offensive coaches, need to take a hard look at their play sheet, and figure out the key plays that can and will work in short yardage.! No excuses, when you have a back like Raymond, or Thevenin or Duff on the outside! Critical plays on 3rd and 4th down, when successful, lead to increased possessions, and better chances to win the game! Unacceptable, by the coaches and the players responsible for executing the call. KC needs to start improving his play calling, especially in the critical 3rd and 4th down short yardage situations. If, we can improve our conversion rate on those situations, along with our defense improving in each game, GS may be correct, with his comments that we are going to surprise a few of our opponents as we complete our schedule. Definitely, a very good possibility! TBD.
